When Cricket Lee stepped behind curtains and sang into a hair brush to entertain her grandfather, she had no idea the practice would pay off. All the years of singing for relatives, at PTOs, churches, and beauty pageants have been training ground for Lee to walk away with the Emerald Coast Southern Gospel Music Association's Beacon Award for Soloist of the Year 2001. I've been all around this area, performing solo work at churches, women's conferences, and revivals," said Lee who travels throughout the tri-state to sing her inspirational music. " I want the spirit of the Lord to move people and help them make a decision to live a Christian life or become a Christian."
Singing songs that send strong messages, Lee believes the intensity she delivers during her performance piques peoples' interest and makes them want to continue to listen. "I really want people to think about their own spirituality and purpose for the Lord," she said.
Those same heartwarming, southern gospel songs are on Lee's latest album, which she's recording in Nashville. She is on the Paradigm Records label out of Panama City. Recording her first album, "For Someone Like Me" was the only original song on the CD.
"The second album will make the first time that we have all original music," said Lee, who also is a piano player. "We're weeding through a lot of songs to find 10 perfect songs for the album. Although the album is ministry driven with a message, it will be commercial enough that radio will want to play it."
Lee has had ample opportunity the past few years to learn form gospel music greats with whom she's sung along onstage such as "Tony Gore and Majesty," "Dixie Echoes," and "The Anchormen." Performing alongside others is nothing new to the soloist. While in the fifth grade, Lee began singing in a girl group under the direction of Terry and Lynn Seymour. She continued singing in church groups and youth choirs throughout school.
Starting in 1999, Lee began touring with New Life, a Cottonwood gospel group, which includes Tinker Danford and Denny Brooks. Before joining New Life, Cricket served as hostess and cruise coordinator for the "Lady Anderson Gospel Cruise" in Panama City Beach, Fla., for seven years.
Lee and her husband Dennis have been involved in a music evangelism ministry, speaking and singing for conferences, revivals and church services throughout the tri-state area. Lee also enjoys coordinating and promoting Southern Gospel concerts as a member of the board of directors.
Performing at Landmark Park functions, as well as an annual downtown street party, Lee travel the highways and biways spreading the gospel and singing her signature song, "Jesus Loves Me." She plans to perform in August to celebrate her new album release.
